[Photo Exhibition Overview]
Having moved to a seaside town, the artist, while creating works themed on nature and the cycles of life, began to see parallels between the ever-changing expressions of the sky, which remain the same but change moment by moment depending on natural conditions, and the way humans change depending on their environment. And by confronting nature through photography, the artist became aware of the characteristics of their own gaze.
The rich gradation of colors in this work, "Utakata," subtly reflects the relationship between nature and one's inner self.
For this work, I used handmade Japanese paper from Fukunishi Washi Honpo in Yoshino, Nara.
One of the reasons why washi paper is made in Yoshino is said to be the excellent quality of the water.
Even when using the same raw material, mulberry, various conditions such as water, temperature, humidity, the condition of the fibers, the papermaking method, and the movements of the maker's hands come together to create a single sheet of paper, and no two sheets are ever exactly alike.
I felt it was similar to the structure of the sky, which changes its appearance depending on various natural conditions such as light, clouds, water vapor, humidity, time of day, and season.
I believe that the way things change due to the overlapping of countless conditions is reflected both in the subject matter and in the material on which it is printed.
